Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens Experience
No visit to Charleston is complete without experiencing the beauty, history, and significance of Boone Hall Plantation, one of America's oldest working plantations and one of the most iconic destinations in the South. Founded in 1681, Boone Hall has been a part of Charleston's story for more than three centuries and offers guests an opportunity to explore the rich cultural heritage, architecture, gardens, and complex history that shaped the Lowcountry.
Perhaps the plantation's most recognizable feature is the breathtaking Avenue of Oaks, planted in 1743. Stretching dramatically toward the main house, these majestic live oaks draped in Spanish moss create one of the most photographed and unforgettable landscapes in the South. Their sweeping branches form a natural cathedral that has welcomed visitors for generations and remains one of Charleston's most treasured landmarks.
During this immersive experience, guests will enjoy a guided tour of the plantation grounds, including the beautifully preserved mansion, where antique furnishings and architectural details offer a glimpse into life on a historic Southern estate. You'll also have the opportunity to explore the Historic Gin House and the powerful Black History in America Exhibit, featuring nine original cabins that tell the stories, resilience, and contributions of the enslaved individuals who lived and worked on the plantation.
A visitor favorite, the covered tractor tour takes guests across the expansive 738-acre property, offering insight into Boone Hall's agricultural history while showcasing how the plantation continues to operate as a working farm today. Along the way, knowledgeable guides share stories of the land, its people, and the evolving history of the Lowcountry.
Guests will also experience a live Gullah cultural presentation, unique to Boone Hall and dedicated to preserving and sharing the traditions, language, and heritage brought to the region by enslaved Africans. This meaningful presentation provides valuable perspective into one of Charleston's most important cultural influences.
The experience concludes with time to wander through the plantation's spectacular gardens, where seasonal blooms, antique roses, and beautifully maintained grounds create a peaceful setting to reflect on the day's discoveries.
